Chapter Twenty-Five

The next six months crawled by for Hart as he waited for David to locate his mother. With so little to go on, he knew it was possible she would never be found. Now that he had made the decision to locate her, everything else seemed to be on hold until he had news.

Hart did what he could to distract himself. In October, he traveled to Las Vegas to bet on the Philadelphia Phillies to beat the Kansas City Royals in the World Series. He certainly didn’t need the money. In fact, he didn’t make a bet over a thousand dollars. He was just trying to stop waiting for the phone to ring.

In November, Hart flew to Maui. Even the perfect weather and suntanned girls in bikinis couldn’t distract him, though. He had planned to stay the entire month, but returned home after a week.

While everyone else was preparing for the holidays, Hart oversaw the construction of a new wing on his house, where he had a home gym built. He decided that even though he felt like he was lost and wandering, this life was set up as good as it could be. He wanted to stay healthy and fit to ensure as many years as possible living it.

Finally, the week before Christmas, he was sitting in his library, a snifter of Grand Marnier beside him, and a copy of James Michener’s The Covenant open in his lap, when the phone rang.

The concept of telemarketing was just beginning to take hold, so on each rare occasion when the phone rang, he knew it was either Nancy or David. No one else had his unlisted number. For the first six months, he had answered each call with nervous anticipation. That had worn off several months ago.

Now he picked up the receiver and said, “Up late cooking the books, Nancy?”

“You’ll have to call her and ask her yourself,” David’s voice answered over a slightly staticky line.

“David? Something to report?”

“Only that I think we’ve found her.”

Hart’s breathing stopped for a moment. “Where?”

“Sun City, Arizona.”

“Of course. Lots of older retired men. She could make her mark, run the con, and be gone before he wakes up from his nap.”

“I think her pattern may have changed. She’s been living there for five years now, if my reports are correct. Did she ever own any real property before?”

“What? God, no! We always skipped out of town when we couldn’t pay our motel bill. Are you saying she owns a house?”

“Not a house, but there is a condo that shows up in the tax records under the name she is currently using. Until you lay eyes on her, though, I have to admit I might be wrong. I’m in Virginia tonight, but I could catch a flight to Phoenix tomorrow afternoon. Would you like to meet me there?”

“Hell, I’d like to already be there. Yes, I will meet you there. I’ll call Nancy and have her make us a reservation at a nice place in Sun City.
